Privacy policy
Last updated: 28 September 2026
This policy explains how CalMeter collects, uses, shares, protects and deletes your information when you use the CalMeter mobile app and calmeter.app. By using CalMeter you agree to this policy.
Summary
- Your food photos are never stored. They are analysed only to recognise the food, on your phone where it has built-in AI, otherwise by Google’s Gemini AI service, and the app deletes its temporary copy as soon as a scan ends.
- We collect only what the app needs to work: your account, profile, goals, and the food and weight you log.
- We never sell your personal or health data, and never use it for advertising, credit, insurance or employment decisions.
- You can permanently delete your account and all of its data at any time, in the app or at /delete-account.
1. Who we are
CalMeter (the “app”) is provided by CalMeter (“we”, “us”, “our”), the developer listed on the app’s store page. For any question or request about your data, contact us at info@calmeter.app.
2. Information we collect
| Type | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal identifiers | Mobile number (if you sign in with a code by SMS); name, email address and profile photo (if you sign in with Google); a name, email or mobile number you add in the app | To create and secure your account and sign you in |
| Health and fitness | Sex, date of birth, height, current and target weight, activity level, goal, daily calorie and macro targets; the foods you log (with portions and nutrition values), custom foods, and weight entries | To calculate your targets and show your diary, progress, BMI and streak |
| App settings | Units, meal reminder on/off and times, appearance | To run the features you turn on |
| AI scan usage | How many AI food scans you’ve used (for the free scans and daily limits) and, for scans processed in the cloud, the date, the AI model and technical usage and cost figures. Never the photo or the foods in it. | To apply the free and daily scan limits and keep the service affordable |
| Purchases | If you buy CalMeter Premium: your plan, whether it’s active, and its purchase, renewal and expiry dates, from Google Play (or the App Store). We never receive your card, UPI or other payment details; the store handles payment. | To give you Premium on every phone where you sign in, and to handle renewals, cancellations and refunds |
| App activity and diagnostics | Crash logs and error reports (device model, operating system, app version, technical details); app integrity signals (whether the app was modified or runs on a rooted or tampered device) | To fix problems and protect your account and the service |
We do not store your food photos. We do not collect: precise or approximate location, contacts, call logs, messages, microphone recordings, the other photos on your phone, or an advertising identifier.
3. Camera and photos
When you scan a meal, the photo is used only to recognise the food, and neither we nor our providers store it. If you pick a photo from your gallery, only that photo is read, for the same purpose. The app deletes its temporary copy as soon as the scan ends.
- On phones with built-in AI (Google Gemini Nano on Android, Apple Intelligence on iPhone), the photo is analysed on your phone and never leaves it. These features are part of your phone’s operating system; Google or Apple may collect usage metrics about them under their own terms, but not your photos.
- On other phones, or when the phone’s built-in AI can’t read a photo, a reduced copy of the photo (resized, compressed and without location or camera details) is sent over an encrypted connection to Google’s Gemini API, which returns the names of the foods it sees. The photo isn’t linked to your name, email or phone number. Under Google’s terms for this paid service, Google doesn’t use photos or results to improve its products and keeps them only for a limited time to detect abuse. We never store the photo.
Food recognition results are automated suggestions and may be wrong. We don’t keep them: only the foods you review and choose to save are stored in your diary. See our terms for how recognition results may and may not be relied on.
4. How we use your information
- To provide the app: your account, diary, targets, progress and reminders.
- To keep your data backed up and available when you sign in on another phone.
- To fix crashes and errors, prevent abuse and fraud, and keep the service secure.
- To respond when you contact us.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We use your data only for these purposes. We don’t make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
5. Health and fitness data
Your health and fitness information is used only to provide CalMeter’s features to you. We do not sell it, share it with advertisers or data brokers, use it to serve or target advertising, or use it to determine eligibility for credit, insurance or employment. Calorie, macro and BMI values are estimates for general wellness and are not medical advice.
6. How we share information
We don’t sell or rent your personal data. We share it only:
- With service providers who process it on our behalf, under contract, only to provide their service: cloud database and hosting; account sign-in (including Google, if you choose Google sign-in); SMS delivery of one-time sign-in codes; food recognition for scan photos (Google’s Gemini API, as described in section 3); app stores and a subscription management provider, to process and verify purchases (they receive your CalMeter account ID, not your meals or health data); crash reporting (Google Firebase); and app security and tamper detection.
- For legal reasons, if required by law, court order or a valid request from authorities, or to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or us.
- In a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition, in which case this policy continues to apply to your data.
7. Where your data is processed
Your data is stored and processed by our service providers in data centres that may be outside your country, including outside India. Wherever it’s processed, we protect it as described in this policy.
8. How we protect it
- All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
- Data kept on your phone by the app is encrypted, with keys held in your phone’s secure storage.
- Access controls ensure each account can read and change only its own data.
- Signing out removes your data from that phone.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.
9. How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your account and all of its data (profile, goals, food logs, custom foods, weight logs and settings) are permanently deleted immediately, and we keep no copy. Records of cloud AI scans (date, AI model and cost figures, never a photo or food) are kept for up to 90 days to apply scan limits and account for costs; when you delete your account they are no longer linked to you. Crash reports don’t contain your meals or personal details and are deleted automatically within 90 days.
10. Deleting your account and data
In the app: Profile → Delete account. Without the app: follow the steps at calmeter.app/delete-account or email info@calmeter.app. You can also remove individual foods or change your profile at any time in the app.
11. Your rights
You can access, correct and delete your data in the app, or ask us for a copy of it, to correct or erase it, or to stop processing it, by emailing info@calmeter.app. We respond within 30 days. If you’re in India, you have these rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, including the right to grievance redressal: contact our grievance contact at info@calmeter.app. Wherever you live, we will honour the rights your local law gives you.
12. Permissions the app asks for
| Permission | Used for |
|---|---|
| Camera | Taking a photo of your meal to recognise the food |
| Notifications | Meal reminders you turn on |
| Alarms and reminders (Android) | Delivering meal reminders at the exact time you chose |
| Internet | Signing in, backing up your data and, on phones without built-in AI, recognising the food in scan photos |
You can turn any of these off in your phone’s settings; the related feature then stops working.
13. Age requirement
CalMeter is only for people aged 18 or over. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.
14. Your responsibilities and limits
- Keep your phone, screen lock, Google account and mobile number secure. Anyone who can unlock your phone or sign in to your account can see your data, and we aren’t responsible for access that results from a lost, shared or compromised device or account.
- Information you choose to share outside the app (for example screenshots or messages) is outside our control.
- Links to other websites or services are governed by their own privacy policies, not this one.
- We aren’t responsible for how Google, Apple, your phone’s manufacturer or your mobile network handle data under their own policies.
- This policy describes how we handle data; it doesn’t create any contractual right or warranty beyond what the law gives you. Our liability is governed by the terms of service.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We’ll change the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app before they take effect.
